Many people considering hypnotherapy want to know whether it actually works.
What Does the Research Say?
Does Hypnotherapy Really Help Insomnia?
Research suggests that hypnosis and hypnotherapeutic techniques can improve various sleep parameters, including sleep efficiency and wake time after sleep onset. A systematic review of hypnosis interventions for sleep problems found that hypnosis shows promise as a treatment that merits further investigation (Chamine, Atchley, & Oken, 2018).
A 2018 pilot study of adults with insomnia examined the effects of a six-session combined Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) plus hypnotherapy for insomnia (HT-I) program. Participants showed significant increases in sleep efficiency and decreases in wake time after sleep onset. In those with additional depressive symptoms, the combined program was also associated with reduced sleep-onset latency and improved feelings of regeneration (Schlarb, Faber & Hautzinger, 2018).

FAQs About Hypnotherapy for Better Sleep
How Many Sessions are Needed?
Research protocols commonly use six sessions. In private practice, when sessions are tailored individually, some clients experience meaningful improvements sooner — particularly where there are no complex comorbid conditions.
Can Hypnotherapy Help if my Sleep Problems are Stress-Related?
Yes. While no therapist can remove stressful events from your life, hypnotherapy can help you change your automatic response to stress so that you take appropriate action without dwelling on what cannot be changed.
What if I Can’t Relax Easily?
There is no requirement to be good at relaxing or meditating, in order to benefit from hypnosis.
There are many hypnotic approaches suited to different cognitive styles — including for people who:
Struggle to “empty” their mind
Don’t visualise easily
Feel restless
Sessions are tailored to your individual processing style.

Real Examples of Change
Sleep Treatment Example 1
A busy young mum of two small children sought support because she recognised she couldn’t continue without proper sleep.
Even when her children were sleeping well, she wasn’t. Catastrophic thoughts about what might happen to them were keeping her awake, “just in case” she was needed.

Reframing catastrophic thoughts
Creating a personalised hypnotic sleep recording

Session 2 Goals
Exploring the source of nightmares
Gently releasing fears linked to past events
Session 3 Goals

Sleep Treatment Example 2
A mid-career professional, juggling the demands of their job and a busy home life, asked for help with shutting off thoughts at night.
Since their last promotion, looping thoughts about work were stopping them getting to sleep on time. Mistakes had started to creep into their work and this was creating additional pressure and fear for the future.
Session 1 Goals
Identifying future-based thinking
Redirecting thoughts to now
Stress management strategies
Creating a personalised hypnotic sleep recording
Session 2 Goals
Acceptance of uncertainty in life
Recognition of skills and resources
Reframing catastrophic thoughts
Follow-Up Review
Increased ability to reframe thoughts
Getting to sleep more quickly
More alert during the day
No more mistakes at work
Could This Help You?
You might recognise parts of your own experience in one or both of these examples. Many people don't realise how much their mind has learned to stay active at night until they begin to see these patterns more clearly.
If you're recognising yourself in this, you don't have to keep managing it alone. You're welcome to book a free 20-minute consultation to explore whether hypnotherapy could help.
